Mini-Split History
Ductless technology (or mini-split) was developed to provide Japan's growing population with an efficient way to cool and heat their homes and businesses. The system was designed to fit into spaces that could not otherwise have been effectively heated or cooled due to the close proximity of Japan's buildings, plus they needed a system that was very quiet. Mini-Split models are perfect for spaces where ductwork cannot fit or where window and wall a/c units are not practical. The term ductless means simply that no ductwork is involved. The system is comprised of two units: a slim outdoor condenser or heatpump, and a small, attractive indoor wall mounted or ceiling suspended fan coil. The condenser supplies coolant to the fan coil through refrigerant lines that run through a small 3 inch opening in the wall or ceiling and into the back of the unit. The fan coil takes in supply air from the room through the front grill and dispenses the newly-cooled air back into the room. You will also notice a much colder output air temperature compared to typical ducted systems and window or wall units. This colder air also provides much greater moisture removal from the air. The result will make you feel cooler at warmer temperatures, allowing you to save energy by setting the thermostat higher and still remaining comfortable. For example, you may be able to set your temperature at 75º and because the air is cool and dry, it will feel like 70º. Another benefit is the ultra-quiet sound level that mini-splits give. Many clients have told us that they had to go up and feel the air to see if the unit was on, because they ran so quietly. |
