Zone Control Systems
In most homes, heating and cooling accounts for the largest part of the energy bill. Despite this, most homes waste a tremendous amount of heat and cool air through inefficient use. Efficiency can be significantly improved by only heating or cooling when necessary (ie. when occupants are present) and by only heating/cooling to the exact desired temperature.
Home automation and zoned HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning) can do this for you automatically. You can set different desired temperatures in each room and by using motion detectors you can automatically turn ON/OFF the heating/cooling to each zone as people enter and leave.
The energy savings in the average home over just a few years will often pay for the entire home automation system.
A simple common-sense analysis of unzoned systems will show you how much you can save. Imagine a 2-zone home with one zone being the living room and the other being the bedroom. An unzoned system will always heat/cool both rooms at the same time even if only one zone is being occupied. This means that twice as much energy is being used as necessary. Add to that any periods when the system is accidentally left on when no one is home and you can see how wasteful this system can be.
An automated zoned system will only heat/cool the room that is being occupied. The occupied room will also be heated or cooled to the desired temperature much faster. This is because the energy that would otherwise be wasted on the unoccupied room is being directed to the occupied room.
A complete system consists of a zone controller, a thermostat for each zone and a motorized damper for each zone.

These controllers can use any 4, 5 or 6 wire thermostat, even power stealing versions. The totalzone controller allows each zone to be set to cool/off/heat individually of other zones. So, if one area needs cooling, which another area needs heating, this controller can arrange that. The controller initiates 2nd stage heat if needed, or heat pump thermostats can be used in each zone. Unoccupied vacation mode allows zone 1 thermostat to control all zones and disables all other thermostats. When in occupied mode each zone is individual of the others. Round Motorized Duct Dampers - Honeywell
As energy costs rise, keeping heating and cooling bills down becomes more of a challenge. One way to take control is by installing Electronic Duct Dampers. Dampers allow you to shut off air flow to unoccupied or unused rooms, limiting the flow of heated/cooled air to those areas that really need it. The increased airflow changes the temperature in the occupied areas more quickly, providing for shorter run times for your heating/cooling system. These units feature a specially designed seal that ensures that a closed damper has a solid positive seal. This eliminates air leakage, which can reduce efficiency and cause "wind" noise in the system.
Round dampers with 24-volt, spring return damper motor used to control volume of circulating air in heating, cooling, and ventilating systems. Shipped as power closed/spring return open (normally open). Can be field-converted to power open/spring return closed damper(normally closed). When used with the multi-zone control panel, simply run 2-conductor wire (18-22-gauge) from the control panel to the damper. It will open or close the dampers to maintain the desired temperature. Control the dampers manually (in single-zone system) by using a switch to apply/remove power to the damper.

Barometric Pressure Relief Bypass Damper - Honeywell
HVAC systems with 3 or more zones should be equipped with a pressure relief bypass duct to prevent over pressure buildup that may damage the system. This duct is installed just ahead of the blower. It opens and redirects some of the airflow back into the blower intake when pressure builds up due to many dampers being closed. This mechanical bypass duct is is continuously variable and the pressure relief level is easily adjustable.
